String Composition Competition - deadline June 30, 2008

The String Orchestra Of New York CIty (SONYC) announces a competition for
works for string orchestra. The winning work will be performed by SONYC during
their 2008-9 season. Other entries will also be considered for future
performances.

GUIDELINES:

  • Tthe piece may have already been performed, but no more than 3 times by a
professional ensemble in a public performance.
  • The composer's birthdate may be no earlier than March 31, 1973.
  • While arrangements of string quartets or quintets will be accepted,
preference will be given to works composed for string orchestra.
  • Works with pre-recorded electronic tracks are welcome, but works with
live electronics will not be accepted.
  • Composers are strongly encouraged to send a recording, including MIDI
realizations. MIDI realizations using piano sounds, rather than string
sounds, are acceptable, as we recognize that some compositions are not
    effective with artificial string sounds.

The string count for SONYC is 4 first violins, 4 second violins, 3 violas, 2
cellos, and one contrabass.

The SONYC concert will be recorded, and the composer will receive a copy of
the recording for the personal use only. It may not be used for release on
CD or other media.

The application deadline is June 30, 2008. It is a postmark deadline. We
request that all entries be sent only by the US Postal Service. Send entries
to:
